Endangered Arts Ecology

Of the plethora of e-mails that flow through my In Box, this one feels like a particularly critical articulation that would probably not be sensed by most people, considering everything else going on in these transitional times. I believe almost anyone who appreciates the arts – as well as artists – would be interested in reading this Washington Post article by Michael Kaiser, President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

My two favorite points in the article are:

We are losing the entertainment and inspiration we need more than ever during this terribly scary time. As we try to rebuild America’s image abroad, we are losing our most potent goodwill ambassadors. As we reshape our economy, we are losing the organizations that teach our children to think creatively. And as we celebrate the diversity of our nation, we are losing the voices that have traditionally helped change society’s thinking…

…As John F. Kennedy said, ‘I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for our victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.’

As we print billions of dollars in bailout money, isn’t it time to ensure that we are saving our soul as well as our economy?

Summary reflection:  In these transitional times, it is more important than ever to support the arts – and as directly as possible, the artists that make up the arts!

Choose To Unite

Choose To Unite Barack Obama Music Video

“…An extraordinary and beautiful manifestation of your prayer for our country and specific intention to make both an immediate and lasting difference for all of us.”

I love that the song and video were called a prayer, for that is what Choose To Unite really was – and continues to be! A prayer that we may bring forward the highest within us, in particular the values sung about in the song of “Diversity… Unity… Community… Love and Equality – We are the change…”

Watch, listen, hold the vision, share!
